Mitaka – NAOJ / Ghibli

I’m thinking about trying to visit the National Observatory of Japan and the Studio Ghibli Museum, since they are both in Mitaka. There’s lots written online about the Ghibli museum, but I can’t find anything that talks about visiting the observatory, since it seems that not many tourists go there. Has anyone been there? What is it like? Would you recommend it?

The observatory has a Dome Theater show on October 21st (only Saturday I plan to be in Tokyo), so I’m thinking about going then to watch the show and also see if I can tour the area. However, there are only 40 seats and you can only book tickets starting the Tuesday before (Oct 17), so I have no idea if I’d actually be able to go or not, which is a problem as the Ghibli museum tickets go on sale on Sept 10th and have to be purchased in advance.

Additionally, they look to be about 3.4 miles apart, which seems like a fair walk. Has anyone gone to both? Did you walk between them?

I also read that most of the museum exhibits are in Japanese and the observatory show is in Japanese as well. I’ve been studying Japanese for several years, so hopefully I’ll be ok on that front, though maybe I’ll need to study animation and astronomy vocabulary beforehand.
