Who to call for maintenance help?

We’ve got a leak in an aircon unit which is dripping down the wall. Started last night, so obviously not using it now.

What should I be looking for for maintenance help? The aircon is outside of warranty, but does anyone know any companies that can come in and check everything?

It’s on a second floor so we can’t just pop outside and check the hose!

Edit to say: own house – no landlord to kick the issue to, so time to learn something new.

  1. Have you tried switching off at the circuit breaker and then taking off the outer cover? The white (probably) shell. For many, like Daikin, they come off pretty easily with just a few screws. Then you might be able to see where the leak is coming from – where is wet. Most likely tape around the tubing. A water leak is likely the drain to the pipe outside since the pipe from outdoor to indoor unit is gas.

As an aside, it can be much cheaper just to replace the whole aircon unit with a basic one from Bic than pay a repair.

  2. If it’s a name-brand aircon like Mitsubishi, Toshiba, etc. they have repair people who can come by. I’ve had appliances repaired by the company guys a couple times – they have a bunch of spare parts etc and can fix you right up, often pretty cheaply even if it’s outside warranty. There should be a customer service number you can call on the company website if you can’t find your manual.

    Inside or outside?

Often the drain of the A/C is clogged. Most of the time, you can get easily to the water line just where it comes out of the wall; you may have to remove a cover. In every home center, they sell cheap small vacuum pumps that fit right into these lines, and you can suck them free with a few pumps.

Another reason may be the current heat. If you set the A/C to a temp that it cannot deliver, then it may shit itself (or ice up) and that can lead to leaking. A/Cs are built to set for about 25, 26°C, and if it is as hot as it is this summer, a bit higher may be better.

  4. The drain hose for condensation that goes through the wall from the inside unit to outside is probably obstructed. Go outside and find it and make sure it isn’t turned or obstructed such that it can’t drain. There is also a small hand pump you can buy from home centers and denkiya to pump out the hose to remove any obstructions that might have gotten inside, like bugs or dirt.

  5. Call the brand company or the store you bought it if it’s from like Yodobashi camera or somewhere. They usually have a hotline in the manual for any technical issues.

Even outside warranty they can service it. It’s probably expensive but the safest option. Next is you could search for any aircon repair service in your area. Just don’t do a DIY since I saw a video about it that there are times that the whole compressor? explodes if you fixed it wrong.

  6. like anywhere in the world where something goes bad in your house, you call a business specialized in fixing that thing to come fix it.
