Tokyo to Kyoto, but where to stop for Mt. Fuji?

I’ll be traveling to Japan at the end of the month (September) and starting the trip at Tokyo. We intend to spend about a week in Tokyo before heading towards Kyoto, but we would love to stop by a scenic town to enjoy a meal and marvel at Mt. Fuji before continuing on to Kyoto.

What Mt. Fuji town would you recommend if we’re taking the train from Tokyo to Kyoto?

And if you have other general Japan recommendations, please do share. Thank you!

  2. For something that doesn’t deviate too far from the shinkansen.. I guess your best bet would be to go to maybe where the Mishima Sky Walk is (short bus from Mishima station off the shinkansen)… that or get off at Shin Fuji station and head towards Fujiyoshida for the iconic street view of Fuji.

  3. Most people will see Fuji while taking the train from Tokyo to Kyoto anyway. You would have to go out of your way if you want a good view of Fuji while traveling to Kyoto and be seated in a restaurant. Would eating an ekibento (travel lunchbox, sold at every trainstation) on the train be an option?
For restaurants offering a more distant view of Fuji from Tokyo – all dependant on good weather, mind you – there’s the Sankaitei restaurant within the tall Hokutopia building near JR Oji Station which does advertise itself with offering a view of Fuji.

  4. I wanted the same but realised none of the places on the way to Kyoto were good enough for me. I rented a car and drove to Fuji Kawaguchiko for one night. It was my favourite scenic place in Japan, so highly recommend.
