Question about visa status / business

Hello everyone! I wonder if anyone knows about this.

So I actually have a small side proxy business alongside my full-time job, mostly buying things and shipping things from Japan to my home country.

And currently, I’m under work visa (engineer/specialist in humanities/international services.) But I’ve been wanting to eventually register my business (maybe starting as a 個人事業) first, and thought I can do that once I get a PR, cause eventually I don’t want to work in company and just want to be flexible and operates my own business.

However, on my last visa renewal I only get a one-year on my visa, (despite previously had a five-year visa. 😣), and my visa expire next April 2024.

Additionally, I’ve been thinking to change job for quite a while, and thinking to take a break for few months during the holiday (dec) as I’ve not returned home after covid so it’s been almost four years.

I thought that I can interview and get next job when I’m going home, as now most job interviews can be done online, but I recently also hear information suggesting that it might be possible to obtain a self-sponsored visa through immigration, and they sent me this link:

How to Self Sponsor Your Work Visa

Right now I’m collecting information so eventually I don’t need to do office work for visa. Does anyone have any experience?

Sorry for long, so basically my confusion / questions are as follows:

1. Currently, it’s my ninth year in Japan, and to apply PR I need to be in Japan for at least 10 years and have been working for at least 5 years, and holding visa at least 3 years. So if I get a 3-year visa next year, I can apply for PR at 2024?
2. Is PR a requirement for registering a business, (starting from a 個人事業) ?Cause if it’s not, I might want to do the self-sponsored route instead of searching for another office job to get extension of work visa.
3. Since I’m planning to quit my job before getting a new job (since I want to take break for few months), there’s a risk that I won’t be able to find a job before April when my visa expires. And I hear there’s this 6-months 就活活動 visa where you can get to search for jobs. Would that affect the PR registration on any chance?

If there’s anyone who have some information, I’d appreciate the insight.

Hope you have a great day ahead!

  1. 1) Yes.

    2) A 個人事業 isn’t a business in the sense you are thinking of it. It’s you operating as a sole proprietor. Anyone is eligible to register as one. A better question would be whether your current activities (selling items abroad) fall under the scope of your current SOR? Also, are you properly declaring this income to the NTA each year?

    3) That SOR is generally only available to students who graduate from a Japanese university (and possibly occasionally to people with extenuating circumstances). It would be advisable, especially if you are hoping to apply for PR, to not lose your work SOR.

    > but I recently also hear information suggesting that it might be possible to obtain a self-sponsored visa through immigration

As the link you provided indicates, self sponsorship isn’t really a thing. What is a thing is having multiple clients, and having your largest / best client act as the sponsoring agency. Especially for renewals, immigration is usually willing to accept the aggregate of all income when evaluating your application.

  2. You can’t start a KK or GK prior to PR. If your side gig does fall not under the scope of your visa then I think that it puts your PR at risk.

Moreover, going from a 5-year to a 1-year seems like a big red flag. Like, a serious red flag.

    Any idea why that happened?

  3. How the hell did you go from a 5 year to a 1 year without changing status of residence??

EDIT: Ah, just read your other post. Yeah, that would do it.
