You’ll need to check if your meds are legal in Japan or not. If not, you’d need to change to meds that are legal here and get stable on them. Then you can go through the process to import meds for a period of time and start seeing someone in Japan to (hopefully…) get a local subscription for the same meds and the same dosages.
That said, moving to a foreign country is quite stressful and takes a toll on the mental health of many people who do it. Not saying you shouldn’t do it, just that many people find it harder than they expected.
You should also be aware that the quality of mental healthcare in Japan is not always great. In larger cities (especially Tokyo) you should be able to find good treatment. More rural areas….might be a lot more difficult. If you’re teaching English you often do not get to choose where you go.
DO NOT move to Japan if you depressed. It WILL only get worse. Don’t worry about if you can, think about if you should, and I answered that for you.
I did— although I don’t see how that would affect hiring because my employer doesn’t know about my medical history. Definitely check to make sure your meds are available here, and I would recommend staying near a big city in order to increase the likelihood of finding an English speaking doctor. When I moved, I brought a 3-month supply of my meds with me, which gave me time to find a doctor and establish care here in Japan.
