Will I have any issues leaving the country if I don’t pay a final NHI Bill?

More context: One of my parents passed away suddenly, so I’m leaving Japan with no intentions of returning.

My partner, who only has a basic grasp of Japanese, went to the ward office to submit paperwork informing them that we’d depart in 12 days. We’d read online that it was a fairly simple procedure.

As part of the process, my partner handed over our National Health Insurance cards, but it seems that she was asked to enroll in a temporary insurance system. I paid my usual health insurance bill of 1.5 man at the beginning of the month. They gave her a bill to pay 4 man for 10 days of coverage.

So, I call the ward office to find out if this is a misunderstanding or what happened. They said there’s not much that can be done except to refund my first payment (1.5 man) and to pay the new bill asap.

I don’t really have the means to afford this bill with all the other costs that suddenly happened. I plan on just moving out and leaving it unpaid. But, I thought it might be worth seeing if some JapanLife Redditors have advice. Like, is this a crime lol?

  1. Sorry to hear that. My condolences.

If you have no intention of returning I don’t see the point of paying an extra 4man. Just be careful so that you won’t require any medical assistance during that 10 days.

  2. Sorry for your loss.

Don’t worry about the 4man. If you ever come back and it’s an issue, “I’m sorry, was so busy getting ready to move out and wrap up my life that I forgot to pay that.”

Apart from that, nothing to be concerned about.

  3. They’re not gonna prevent you from getting on the plane, no.

If you do return someday, it will still be there waiting for you, possibly with penalties and may hinder any attempts at PR. That’s about it.
