Changing visa to passport of different nationality

Hi, I have a British and Irish passport. My Japanese student visa is in my British passport, but because I frequently need to travel outside of Japan to conduct field research, this passport is about to run out of pages. I would like to transfer my student visa to my Irish passport, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to leave Japan for months whilst my overseas application for a new British passport is processed. Is this possible? TIA

  1. Your visa is your residence card, not the entry permit in your passport. I’m not entirely sure how that works with passports, but at the very least you would treat it like a renewed passport and give a copy to immigration.

  2. You can do it following this process: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/applications/procedures/nyuukokukanri10_00009.html

Edit: keep in mind that after doing this change in nationality if you’re traveling to a country you need a visa for its likely you’d have to get it in your Irish passport. So no idea how that might affect any scholarships/grants you might be getting if they are tied to the premise of you being a British student in Japan though.
