Consulting perception in Japan

A bit of a long shot but looking for former / current consultants thriving in Japan.

Senior business consultant operating in the data / AI space in Western Europe here. 3-4YoE
I have N2, will take N1 later this year, and lived in Japan for 3 years in the past.

I was wondering whether there’s any difference in the way consulting experience is valued in Japan compared to other countries, as I am considering a move in the next future.

In essence, has anyone managed to play the ‘consulting card’ to get roles that required more experience than they had thanks to the skills they got in consulting (I.e., exposure to many industries / technology, people skills, stakeholder mgt, strategic thinking ..)? If yes, which firms?

For now Amazon JP & Woven come as natural candidates but happy to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

  2. I am not sure I understand this post, but I will try.

If you’re asking if Japan uses consultants, Yes. Actually, i’ve hired them.

Do people in Japan join consultancies to gain a whole lot of experience quickly? Can’t answer that, but I am guessing that the consultancy structure is the same as the US, since I believe the Big 5 are all US based companies, and I believe that is how they operate (I could be wrong here, but I was too lazy to google).

For your last comment, I have no idea what you’re asking. I’m assuming you mentioned those companies because they have a lot of english. They do. They also happen to be highly technical. Are you wanting to be a consultant specifically for those companies? That is fairly niche to be an english speaking consultant in JP, but you would first have to be hired by a consulting company, yeah?
