Itinerary check – short trip for a family with three kids

I’m in the early stages of planning a trip for my family (myself, husband, 12-year old, 10-year old and 7-year old). We’ll be traveling in mid-March, hopefully not yet too crowded with people coming to see the cherry blossoms. I don’t want to pack too much in each day as this will be my kids’ first international trip, but I also don’t want to miss out on anything major. We will only stay in Tokyo and Kyoto and make some day trips from those two cities. Here is what I have. I’d appreciate any advice or insights.

Day 1: arrive Tokyo – get settled at a hotel/airbnb in Ueno

Day 2: Senso – ji early in the morning – planet labs – imperial palace

Day 3: explore Shibuya Рhedgehog caf̩ РTokyo skytree for sunset

Day 4: either explore more in Tokyo or day trip to Nikko?

Day 5: Disney Sea (my husband’s only request)

Day 6: Shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto – explore Gion

Day 7: Fushimi Inari early morning – tea ceremony – Nishiki market

Day 8: morning trip to Himeji castle – return to Kyoto Kiyomizu-dera in the afternoon

Day 9: Kinkaku-ji morning – trip to Nara in the afternoon

Day 10: Shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo – depart

Thanks!

  2. Mid March you should be able to see plum blossoms. It’s not as popular as cherry blossoms but there are some nice viewing spots.

  3. Senso-ji and Skytree are on the same side of Tokyo like at walking distance. Why do both on different days.

teamLab Borderless will be open so you have an extra option if you prefer it over Planets.

Hedgehog cafe is not recommended for people who care about animal welfare.

Kinkaku-ji and Nara are about as far apart as you can with. I would consider doing Kinkaku-ji and tea ceremony on the same day and Fushimi Inari-taisha with Nara as it’s much more on the way.

I would consider moving some Tokyo days at the end (or at least last night). While train are usually on time, is something happen and the train is delayed or stop. While it is a low chance, it have high consequence if you miss your flight.
