I have to pay shaken soon. The price they qoted me was a bit on the high side but i could still afford it. However the same day, they did all the checking and the bill came back much higher than before. Now I hav to pay 37万円 and i don’t really have the ability to pay for it.

Maybe you can negotiate an installment plan with them or borrow money from friends or family.
Go through each item and differentiate between required or not. From the list of items not required, ask why. Some things like battery make sense with winter approaching and if it’s been a few years since you last replaced the battery. Other things like transmission flush, tire rotation, cabin air filter replacement may be some services they are trying to charge you for, that’s not necessary for shaken.
Edit; Fixed a lot of typos from smartphone typing.
As you may know, driving without a shaken is not legal. As someone else mentioned, try to do installment or borrow money.
You could also refuse the quote and bring the car to a different place. I got 2 quotes, from Yellow Hat and from Kobac, and Kobac didn’t find as many things to replace as Yellow Hat did. I ended up going with Kobac and saved 3万 on my shaken (last week!). Whether it means Yellow Hat did a better job at checking or just tried to make more money, is open to interpretation.
Finally, you can sell the car to some shops, but they’ll probably rip you off since you don’t have a shaken.
I don’t really understand what your saying? They quoted you one price to which you agreed and now charged you more money without confirming beforehand?
Can’t help unless you breakdown the ¥370,000 quote/bill or scan and upload it.
This is why I’ve always gone to a dealer for shaken–suzuki, toyota, and honda, respectively. They’re far more likely to treat you fairly, and have the sense to notify you if there’s something they need to replace but they missed on the estimate.
The private places will underquote, and then once they’ve got your car, put the squeeze on.
Whatever you do, don’t go to Bigmotor for your shaken- absolute ripoff!! This was before all their crap with ripping of insurance companies and killing trees.
What work are they doing on your car?
Is there any reason to suspect it wouldn’t pass shaken if you simply took it to the test center yourself?
Is that a quote for the work or have they done work you didn’t sign off on? Are you sure you didn’t sign off?
Where are you located? What car? What are they trying to charge you for?
Jesus Christ! Shaken is that expensive?
Or is it that they also fix things?
Edit. Wouldn’t it almost be cheaper to buy a “new” car with shaken? lol
Do your own shaken. Search ユーザー車検. I’ve never paid more than 5万 for the whole thing.
Your dealer is screwing you.
Take it to Autobacs or Yellow Hat. They’ll give you a shaken quote for free, and it will be MUCH less. Then go through it line by line and take off anything that’s not strictly necessary for shaken, and it will become even cheaper.
Battery? Not a shaken item.
Tires? Unless they’re down to the wear bars, not an issue.
etc.
Does I understand that right, the guy who’s responsible for doing your shaken are the same who are preparing your car to pass it?
That’s not allowed in my country, these entities are strictly separated, otherwise the guy who’s doing the shaken can just simply put everything on your bill he wants to
How old is your car? What repairs are needed? Why weren’t you told in advance?
[This is a guide on self/user shaken](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/hxm9j1/written_guide_with_photos_to_doing_your_own/) from right here on j-life.
A little dated, but my guess is that not much has changed–and as one post says, it’s also in the wiki.
If you think your car is in order you can try ユーザー車検
Not sure what kind of car tout have but be aware you need to pay the 重量税 and some other tax, those are non négociable sacs varies depending on the type of car
Unless your car is a total wreck or a luxury sportscar, that sounds incredibly unreasonable. Potentially lots of unnecessary add-ons? With my last kei car, it was 20 years old and a bit of a wreck, but it never went over 17万. Now I have a large Toyota Alphard and even that only took 14万 with some repairs and replacement parts in.
Could be a fair price, could be a rip-off. You need to give the details if you need help.
do user shaken. The test is silly and easy. Just need to do the motions and endure the paperwork gauntlet.
Eco cars get a discount on weight tax. You need to buy your mandatory insurance, pay the shaken test/paperwork/sticker. Took about 1.5 hour.
Edit My total was about 2.5万
Did you by any chance went yo BIGMOTOR ? They just got caught scamming ppl.
I go to my local Toyota and tell them to check and handle only strictly shaken-failing issues, then go do the test myself. Saves hassle on the day if something more major is necessary. Lots of videos on youtube of doing the test itself too. Other than whatever strictly needs doing repair-wise, which has varied between about 4,000- 70,000 depending, the shaken itself is about 75,000 (?) all-in for mine.
Is this a dealer? What make is it? Is the price an estimate? You just got an estimate you didn’t have the repairs done yet ?
I did mine myself and it’s a German car and around 50,000. .. a local shop quoted me about 95,000… but the self shaken place is only like 15 minutes from my house… and takes about an hour and a half ..
I hope you haven’t done the repairs yet and please try to get estimates from a few places …
…37万?I’d take the advice to check it at YellowHat or Autobacs.
Going in for shaken on my 2014 Carolla Fielder this Saturday. Toyota dealer gave me three different quotes. 1 for just getting shaken done, 1 for shaken and a few things that could be replaced/fixed, and 1 for replacing anything that gave the mechanic a dirty look. The most expensive option came to 18万.
Considering my hour + work commute, yearly trips to osaka, and acting as a private chauffeur for friends and family. Something seems off from your quote.
2017 model shouldn’t have enough rust to warrant those types of repairs. I think they are being overly critical and you should find a better place. I work in a JCI shop, and we can either get people by with the minimum, or fleece people for thousands. It’s very uncommon for repairs of that amount, but not impossible. I’d have to see a breakdown of the parts & labor.
