When to apply for 6-12 month language schools starting in April?

Hi all,

In late September I will move to Tokyo and will work there till late March 2023. After that I hope to stay 6-12 months longer and do some intensive language studying. I am wondering if I should already start applying right now or if it is safe to wait till later in the year when I am actually there and could have a look at the schools etc. Or perhaps I am too late already?

If it matters, I expect to have reached the intermediate level by the time I’d begin in April but I am currently still going through the basic levels and are not ready to do a language test yet. I am looking for something intensive in order to reach NT2 in 6-12 months after that.

Furthermore, will it be easy to switch visa types will in Japan, or will they force me to leave the country, request a new visa at an embassy, and then come back?

Thanks for the help!

  1. You should really just check with the schools. Most of this information (especially the student visa application schedule) will be on their web sites, and for anything that isn’t covered there you should just email and ask them.
