Kansai thru pass?

Travelling to Japan in November 2023. Will be purchasing my jr rail pass this month before price increase. I see there is the option to get the kansai thru pass. We will be staying 3 nights in kyoto and 2 in Osaka, is it worth it to buy the thru pass ahead of time or is this something we can purchase when we arrive/ or is it better just to pay for local transit as we go? Any insight would be appreciated!

  1. It’s only worth it for high intensity, longer-distance excursions – think Koyasan day trips, Hieizan day trips, or doing all three of Ohara/Kurama/Kibune in the same day. For generic travel between Kyoto and Osaka city centers it’s not worth the cost.

  2. The thru pass require to do several of the most expensive possible rides to be worth. Just moving between Kyoto and Osaka and around these cities, not worth.

I mean, you can easily calculate the cost of all the individual rides and compare to the price of the pass, just as you should have done before you decide to buy the JR Pass. Actually, are you sure it is worth getting the pass?
