Chubu Region Itinerary Check

Hi all! My wife and I are planning our next trip to Japan and just wanted to gauge how feasible our plan is. This would be our first time in the Chubu region and I’m worried it may be too ambitious.

Day One – 11/26

* Arrive in HND @ 4:30pm

* Check into Hotel (Location TBD)

Day Two – 11/27

* Leave early to Nagoya (2 hours).
* Spend the day checking out the city.

Day Three – 11/28

* Travel to Takayama (2.5 hours).
* Takayama Jinya
* Sanmachi Suji
* Kusakabe Heritage House
* Hachiman Shrine
* Higashiyama Walking Course

Days Four – 11/29

* Travel to Kanazawa (2 hours).
* Omicho Market
* Oyama Shrine
* Gyokuseninmaru Garden
* Kanazawa Castle
* Kenrokuen Garden
* Seisonkaku Villa

Day Five – 11/30

* Travel to Toyama (0.5 hour).
* Travel to Nagano via the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route (6-7 Hours).
* This is the last day that the Alpine Route is open…happy to skip this and buy another day somewhere else.

Day Six – 12/1

* Day trip to the Monkey Park (1 hour).
* Head back to Tokyo that evening (3 hours). Stay in Ikebukuro.

Day Seven – 12/2

* Rest so that my wife doesn’t kill me.

Day Eight – 12/3

* Travel to Chichibu (1.5 hours)
* Enjoy the Night Festival
* Travel back to Tokyo (1.5 hours)

The rest of our trip (We depart 12/8) will be spent around Tokyo. I feel like we’d be spending a lot of time on trains, but I don’t know if there’s a better way to do Chubu…unfortunately, coming back for the Chichibu Festival is forcing a bit of a rush. Would it make more sense to go straight to Nagoya after arriving in Tokyo? It’s a lot for a day of travel but…it might make the rest of the trip less stressful.

Any advice/insights would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  1. if you’re gonna have a rest day to avoid death anyway, might as well just rest out in chubu at a nice hot springs or something.

    Your kanazawa day might have some issues finishing everything depending on order you go due to closing hours.. put the 24 hours stuff towards the end probably? that said that list is probably still too long for you to fully enjoy everything. Maybe skip the castle unless you haven’t seen other castles in Japan before? Or maybe just check out Nagoya Castle as I think that is the more interesting one of the two(from what I remember anyway).

  2. Monkeys will likely not be in the water (no snow) and unless they ring the bell for food probably not even by the water. Wouldn’t really “waste” a whole day on them.

    Tateyama on the other hand will guaranteed have snow so make sure to bring proper clothing. It will be much colder than the rest of your itinerary
