Sub sandwich in Tokyo?

Sandos have become so boring and am craving a real sandwich. Does anyone know where I can find a sub sandwich near Tokyo loaded to the gills with cold cuts or deli meats? I’m looking to give my arteries a run for their money.

I’ve seen a few subways around but I’m was hoping there might be a few special spots that do something nice, maybe even a Montreal smoked meat sandwhich? Pastrami? Cold cuts!!! 🙏

  1. No tips for you but wanted to commiserate. A few months ago, I was desperate for a not-sando, so I made myself a muffuletta. The hard part is the bread, they don’t really sell that kind of bread here. Made do with a ciabatta but it’s not the same.

  2. You’re a year too late. They had a real Jewish deli in Marunouchi with homemade pastrami but they’ve closed down.

No authentic deli cold cuts but The Earl in Akasaka has some “real” American style sandwiches including their sizes.

  3. Freeman Shokudo has amazing pastrami sandwich. Also in the same neighborhood, there’s Toyodas cheesesteak. Both legit.

  4. I miss Italian-style (well, NYC-area Italian-immigrant-style) subs so much. Ham and capicola and provolone and some lettuce with oil and vinegar.

There’s a chain (?) called Copain in Tokyo where you can get a pastrami sandwich, but there’s so little meat in them that you’d really need to buy five or six and then pile all the meat into one of them to get the flavor of a real pastrami sandwich. A pale imitation of what we’re looking for.

  5. Don’t have a good suggestion, but was wondering if maybe a Vietnamese bahn mi might scratch the itch?

  6. Other than Harry’s and The Earl as others have mentioned, highly recommend Sidewalk Stand by Nakameguro. They make a fantastic Reuben!

  7. I can personally say Harry’s has amazing sandwiches, but idk if it’s “loaded to the gills” like you want. They’re more west coast, you seem like maybe you want more east coast.

  8. [The Daps Famous Hood Joint](https://goo.gl/maps/DDBzKBqTp7N32ZqDA) in Kichijoji apparently has good sandwiches, more like hoagies.

[Qinos](https://qinos.jp/) for pastrami sandwiches in Koshikawa (Bunkyo)

[Sendagi Koshizuka](https://goo.gl/maps/rGc6mfFBb5e5WJsb8) does takeout / pre-made corned beef numbers

And yes, Freemans (thought pricey for sure, avoid the beer!) I vouch for. Only went to Harry’s once and it took 45 minutes and the other patrons were SO loud so have not felt like going back..

  9. After the initial subway disappointment I had here (in my country subway is really good) I found vietnamese banh mi to scratch my sandwich itch. Vietnamese french baguette is so far the closest I found to the bread I could get at home.
