Looking for a textbook with kanji and pitch accent

Hi,

I’ve decided to start learning Japanese. I’ve memorized most of the kana, and so a friend of mine gave me Genki 1 and 2. I took a look at the first lesson today and I noticed that everything is in hiragana with some katakana, even though these are common words that would usually written in kanji. There’s also no indication of which syllables are meant to be in a high or low pitch.

Are there any textbooks which do teach the vocabulary with these details? I already checked the sub FAQ and found nothing about this.

  2. There’s a textbook called “Japanese: The Spoken Language” that includes pitch accents but it is presented entirely in romanized Japanese with a companion volume called “Japanese: The Written Language” that focuses on the writing system. I have never looked at either but some universities use it (or did when I was in school anyway). That said I think you should not get so fixated on this and just worry about picking it up as you go along. Genki or whatever other popular choice has had lots of thought go into its presentation and studies show that materials that are at pains to really emphasize pitch accent can sometimes accidentally cause learners to over exaggerate and speak unnaturally which is the exact opposite of the goal.
