I am coming up on the end of a 3 year spouse visa. It was my first visa in the country. Wife and I had planned to move to Japan in early 2020. My wife moved ahead of me, I was going to stay until April/May to earn extra money then head over. Got delayed by Covid travel restrictions, which made the Visa and CoE process a bit messy, but I was able to come over around Nov 1, 2020.
Her father was listed as the guarantor as she did not yet have a job, and he makes BIG money.
Dealing with applying for the extension now and doing some research. None of the sites I have visited or researched has had any mention on the subject of alternate guarantors. They all assume that the spouse would be the supporter/guarantor.
I am wondering if anyone has had experience or knowledge on this specific subject. My wife makes decent money, I make typical English teacher money. I would love if we were able to back our listed funds up with a much more significant number (an extra zero or two on the yearly salary), as I am under the impression this would help in acquiring a potentially longer time before renewal was again needed.
Any input or knowledge shared on the subject would be much appreciated. And thank you to anyone who took the time to read through all this.

You don’t need to prove income as far as I’m aware for a spouse visa extension. At least I never did. You just need to show that you paid your taxes. Furthermore you don’t need a longer spouse visa just another 3 year one to apply for PR in November.
Renewal period is whatever they feel like giving you on the day. There is no sure way to influence them.
If you want play mind-games with the immigration office then present the highest status Japan person that you can but as long as they accept your guarantor then really that is all there is to it.
Technically if you’re receiving monthly monetary support from a relative, there’s a space on the residence status renewal form to include that. But I don’t think you’ll need to do that
