Seeking the Ideal Tokyo Gym for Strength Training and Weightlifting – Recommendations Appreciated!

I’m searching for a gym in Central Tokyo where I can focus on strength training and weightlifting. Does anyone have any recommendations for a suitable facility?

I’d prefer a gym that’s not too crowded during off-peak, especially since I have the flexibility to work out during weekdays.

A spacious environment, bigger facility would be great (but I know that’s probally not possible in Tokyo), and I’d like to avoid being locked into a year-long contract since I’ll only be using the gym for three months.

Currently, I am considering Gold’s Gym. I like that they have a dedicated female weightlifting area.

Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Your best bet will be Gold’s. Forget about the female only area. Don’t limit yourself to those few machines. Just use the gym like anyone else and don’t worry about things.

  2. It’s not spacious, and it’s not in Tokyo, but I’ve taken a year’s worth of gym membership fees and built a pretty well-equipped home gym. You will never be more satisfied with your subscription.

Edit – didn’t see you were only in Tokyo for 3 months. Forget what I said.

  3. Gold’s is exactly what you are looking for, plenty of girls go so it’s nothing out of the ordinary and it’s got everything you could want for strength training

  4. In my experience – worldwide – Gold’s Gym are all shite. I currently use Joyfit 24, because I can use any branch and because my local branch has two squat racks and extensive space for strength/weight-training (and they recently increased their strength training facilities, including finally adding dumbells up to 40 kg, hooray!). But it’s funny, I just hired a guy who is really serious about WORKING OUT and when I told him I used Joyfit he literally sniggered. But then he told me he uses Anytime Fitness. At which point I sniggered, because all of my local Anytime Fitness have the worst strength/weight-training facilities. And actually as we chatted, it turned out that he has been told off for using the squat rack for too long (even when there was nobody else in the gym!) and also told off for working out with a friend.

So it really depends on your local branch! Any chain gym (Gold’s, Anytime, Tipness, Joyfit) is really gonna depend on the branch that you are going to use – you just need to make sure you check out the gym before you use it.

But I would heartily endorse Joyfit. There are some branches that are crap, but I think most branches have at least one or two squat racks.

Good luck finding a good gym – and good luck with your workouts!
