Life in Okinawa – Job Hunting

Hey everyone, I am a new member here.

I am starting to settle down in Okinawa with my partner and we are slowly checking off the important boxes.

I was curious if there are any foreginers living in Japan who have had to find a job while already in Japan. If so, do you have any advice based on your experience? I am open to pretty much any job, including English teaching.

Thank you in advance!

  1. Found job after coming here. Start searching on indeed. If you have marketable skills, talk to a recruiter too.

  2. Do you have a visa that lets you work? If so, you can find work in Okinawa pretty easily, but expect it to pay a lot less than in the mainland. For example, my niece who is an RN in Japan couldn’t find a hospital job paying more than Â¥800/hour (this was 15 years ago so things might have changed somewhat, though probably not a lot).

There is also generally less enthusiasm among parents in Okinawa to send their kids to after-school English/whatever lessons, and they expect to pay less, so English teaching wages aren’t great.

  3. Quite a few contracting jobs on the US bases but I don’t know how the salary is or what your background is.

  4. Gaijinpot jobs is a good place to look if you just want to teach English. If you are comfortable with Japanese, check out bizreach. I’ve had most of my interviews through bizreach and linkedin, but I don’t live in Okinawa.

  5. Can you find a job? Sure.

But to be more helpful, people really need to know what your quals are.
