Freelance work – can I use overseas bank account?

So, I have now received my dependent work permit and would like to apply my freelance business at the locale tax office and start working asap.
The job I have already done before and I have a standing partnership with a company that is located in the EU. Since I previously worked for them while residing in the EU, my account with them is set up as hourly payment in EUR and they previously sent my checks to my EU bank account as well. Despite now residing and paying taxes in Japan, I would actually prefer to continue to receive my payments in EUR and to my overseas account since it is currently a bit more stable than the Yen.
My question: am I allowed to receive the money overseas despite being registered for taxes here or will I need a local bank account to make tax statements in yen? I am a bit lost and not sure if I should book an accountant for these things.

Thanks for any help with that.

  1. In some cases, the money that you earn outside of Japan, that is not transmitted into Japan is not taxed. For details read r/JapanFinance wiki, ask there and do your own research.

P.S. of course you’re allowed to receive money in any bank account anywhere. If the income is taxable, there are rules about conversion, like what day’s exchange rate to use.

  2. You can receive payments in any currency you like. Ideally you would want a Japanese bank account to pay taxes (in Yen), but you can also do it at the konbini.
