PayPay Scam? What are my options?

こんばんは!
TLDR at the bottom.

Two weeks ago I bought an Apple Watch 6 from someone on PayPay for 3万円。It was locked to an Apple ID with a .jp domain, so I asked them to remove it.
They said they cannot see it on their account, and I sent them a link to Apple’s website explaining the procedure.

After a few messages, we agreed on returning the watch by putting it on PayPay again and them buying it.

I used my friend’s account to buy it (they had a coupon).
I used my account to return it. (Made a 専用 posting for the original seller).

Well they bought it, and republished their original listing on PayPay again (even before getting the actual watch).
A few days pass and message me saying they want to remove the apple id linked to the watch, and that they’ve never seen it before.

They want to send me the watch and get their money back. It’s their watch and my money so I’m pretty sure they are trying to scam me and evade PayPay’s polices.

I’m still talking to them but it’s a matter of time once they request a refund from PayPay, and I think PayPay don’t know the whole story so they’ll be on their side.

What are my options? Can I do a credit chargeback if PayPay screws me?

TLDR:
Bought a locked Apple watch, returned it because it was locked. Seller claims to not know the account that it is locked to and wants to send watch back to scam me.

Side note:
Currently out of the country for the next two weeks, but I do have friends that can help.

  1. You probably screwed up using your friends account to buy it, and then yours to return it.

Most likely the seller doesn’t even know account it’s locked to.

Your best bet is filing a claim with paypay and wait it out. Ideally have a friend with native Japanese assist you as the customer service process is probably overly complicated (at least mercari is)…

  2. Uh… paypay is the phone QR code payment thingy, I don’t think they have a marketplace. By any chance you meant merucari?

  3. I wasn’t sure which side was scamming while reading this.

Keep things simple. No one would let you use coupons to wipe your butt.

  4. I’m not familiar with shopping on PayPay so forgive me if I’m misunderstanding some things but there are few things that’s not making sense.

    1. Why did you accept the product if it wasn’t as advertised? (I’m assuming there’s a process to verify and accept the that the product received was as advertised.)
    2. Why didn’t you just ask for a refund instead of selling the watch back to them?
    3. Why did you use a different account to sell the watch?
    4. So now they have the watch and you have their money? Assuming everything you’ve said is true, just withdraw the funds so there’s nothing to refund. The worst thing that could happen is you get blacklisted and won’t be able to use their services again.

I’m not saying you’re a scammer but as an objective reader, I’m not sure who’s scamming who. Don’t be surprised if PayPay won’t be able to tell either.

  5. This is a total mess. I’m not familiar with PayPay Furima but surely there must be a way to cancel/reimburse without randomly paying some unrelated PayPay account?

  6. What a complicated story here. I’m sorry for this mess. If counterpart is really scamming then it’s an expensive lesson. Keep it simple next time and don’t to transactions when you’re out of country.

That said- I have bought several apple devices (laptops, phones, AirPods, Apple Watch) on yahoo and mercari and I’ve never been cheated or scammed. It was always as advertised. If not I would have asked for a refund first thing. Knock on wood haha.

I bought an activation locked MacBook M1 once. It was advertised as such so it was not a scam. I just thought maybe it wasn’t locked but…too good to be true. Anyway I managed to sell it for the same amount if paid for it so no harm done.

Good luck getting a nice Apple Watch. They’re worth it imo.

  7. Why two accounts? Why resell it back on a different account? Why accepting the order when it was defective in the first place? I never used paypay freema but on mercari you have to click that you received and it’s OK for the seller to receive the money, if it’s not ok you return it right away.

  8. There are no options here. Only lessons to be learned and to never be repeated. Sorry for your experience
