Hi! Any recommendations for Japanese movies or books that aren’t mostly talking for summer cicadas, geishas and “japanese culture intensify”? As much as I like those, I feel like it’s a bit sometimes repetitive and unoriginal and I’m searching for original things talking about modern life as a whole. I really liked the two TV series of Yuji Sakamoto (Quartet and My dear exes) that Netflix subbed, for example, as they were as ridiculous as sincere, or the book “All the lovers in the night” by Mieko Kawakami (even if the ending was infuriating), or even the movie Shoplifters (such a wrong translation for the title)). I’m not sure if that’s clear, but basically I’m searching for medias that aren’t necessarily trying to include “the japanese culture” in their creation, but just japanese writer and directors writing from their perspective. Would love any advice!
