Are most Japanese people this short?

I live in a relatively small city in Hungary, the population is around 30k. Today i was waiting at the bus stop for my bus. And out of nowhere 10 people, all of them Japanese (They were speaking loudly enough for me to recognize it was Japanese). All of them were under 140 cm. I’m trying not to seem racist as much as possible buuut i just had to ask this. This is also pretty weird considering the only cities tourists mainly go to are Budapest the capital, and sometimes Eger. But even those tourists are mostly German or English. It is not very common to see people not from my country in my city. Not to speak of other continents. Any guesses what this might have been?

  1. You must be exaggerating, I guess… but yes, Japanese people, on average, are shorer. Around 170cm is average for men and 160cm for women.

  2. The average height of a japanese man is 170cm. I don’t have a lot of other things to add to your post.

  3. You’re basing your judgment of a whole country’s average height on 10 people in your city?

But, yes. They didn’t make the height requirement to go to Budapest so they went to a random city instead.

  4. Japanese tends to be rather short even in comparison with many other Asians like Koreans, and not to mention Europeans, but [the statistics say](https://www.e-stat.go.jp/dbview?sid=0003224177) the average height for 17 y/o (which is used in many height statistics in Japan for some reasons) are set at 158cm. So statistically speaking, if you found a Japanese group of 10 late teen or older all at 140cm and less sounds very rare. Even 80+ year old is averaged at 146cm (minus hunch back factor I guess.)

My guess is that either your number was exaggerated, they selectively befriended short girls, or they were in fact 200 year old lol

  5. Height is affected by environmental factors such as nutrition. You’ll find a large variance in height by age. If you’re in Japan, you’ll notice young adults are much closer to the average height elsewhere compared to old folks. Some quick googling bears out some numbers: older men had an average height of 162cm versus young men having an average height of 172cm.

  6. Average is about 171.4 cm, 5’7.5”.

So anywhere, around 6’1 (185.4cm) is considered Tall there.

But, if you’re 5’10 you will be taller than 88% and plus of the population

  7. I use to live in Japan, I am 5 ft tall, everyone that worked with was much taller than me. I am talking 5’9 and above.

  8. The only thing I can think of is maybe they were all little old ladies? The older generation is in general shorter than younger people. However, 140cm is child-sized even here. I think you’re exaggerating.
