From what I understand, in official government documents and public notices, there’s a strict rule where only 常用漢字 (Joyo Kanji) can be used and no 表外字 (Hyogaiji) is allowed, and newspapers typically follow this rule. But what about in everyday life? I’ve heard some people write out the Kanji, some don’t. Like from what I understand, the word 嘘/うそ (lie) is technically a hyogaiji and the government officially recommends you write it out in kana, but most Japanese write out the Kanji? Or the word for pepper is written in Kanji as 胡椒, but google translate lists it as コショウ.
