Denied a Blood Donation for Having J&J Vaccine

I just tried donating blood in Hiroshima, everything went smoothly until I was asked about which vaccines I took. When I mentioned “a dose of Phizer, ***and Johnson & Johnson***” the guy immediately went to his coworker and inquired about it. He then returned to me, apologizing, saying that I wouldn’t be able to donate blood for now. His explanation regarded something about J&J but I didn’t really understand it. Definitely disappointing, but least he gave me some incentives! (An Aquarius and some alcohol wipes)

  1. I think Japan only recently started considering J&J as a valid form of vaccination for entry into Japan. It could be that they have rules about being vaccinated for blood donation, and they still don’t consider J&J an acceptable form.

  2. you need to follow their guidelines, and wait until JJ is allowed.
currently, Pfizer and Moderna: after 48hs, Astrazeneca: after 6 weeks. other vaccines, can not donate

  3. Yeah it’s an interesting problem. For instance because the US only tests a portion of the beef that it ships for brain/spinal chord material Japan wouldn’t (no idea if this is still the case) allow their beef in – which is why Australian beef took over most of the market.

Prions are weird little proteins. It’s an interesting problem and Japans solution has been, as usual, to require 100% o allow nothing. While you can make a good argument that statistically you should capture all the “bad” beef realistically there is always a CHANCE one will get through (just like you know, testing everything and someone fucking up).
