I’m going to be living in Japan for a year on the working holiday visa, but I probably won’t have a job for the majority of my time there. Should I get health insurance for the year? If so how much does that cost roughly (for one person)? And how should I go about it generally?
I’ve had a quick look but all the quotes I’ve seen are really expensive. I assume that if I get long stay travel insurance with medical coverage that would cover me, so maybe that’d be a cheaper option?

Sign up for the national health insurance when you register your address. The cost varies a little bit by prefecture, but with little to no income you can expect it to be pretty cheap.
