I would like an outside assessment of my plan to move

Hi all, I am going to detail some things about myself and my plan to move, and would like to be told if I am delusional or not. Thanks 🙂 Here we go:

I am planning on moving February next year. I have been many times to see family, but want to move now.

I am 21M, half Japanese/Australian. I have a Japanese citizenship and passport so visa is not a problem.
I currently live in a city in Australia that does not foster the arts or creativity very well, and I am currently working in the music and fashion industry in Australia, so I would like to move to Tokyo to give my career a boost. I would also like to explore my Japanese side, as I feel this is a birthright for me given I have lived most of my life in Australia.

I have a diploma in Audio Engineering, my strongest skills are in music production and audio engineering.
I am currently working full time as a Broadcast Engineer at a radio station here (this is a highly technical job compared to my creative work, and requires an extremely high level of computer literacy), by the time I leave for Japan I will have 1 year of full time work experience. I am really good at making music and producing, and have one album released so far.

I also work part time as a fashion model signed to an agency. I also hope to work as a model in Tokyo, although I will not rely on this for income, as it isn’t stable.

I am also at a high level with photography and video editing, and also have skills designing clothes and fashion items with 3D software.

My Japanese is at a conversational level, and I am actively learning. I know most basic kanji and vocab.

Overall, most of my skillsets are in creative fields, and although I have a body of work to represent these skills, creative work is still lucrative, although I assume it’s not as lucrative in Tokyo as it is in my current city.
I do have a high amount of technical ability in the realm of Radio and Audio Engineering.

Because of friends I have in Tokyo, I am kind of well connected and know some people who are also well connected to people in the television/music industry in Tokyo. I have family in Tokyo, Chiba and Nagoya.

I will have 17k AUD (Roughly 11k USD or 1,617,396 yen) saved for the move.

I would like to move to Tokyo to explore my Japanese side, learn Japanese, and eventually become established in the Music, Fashion and Art industry there. I believe Tokyo has much more opportunity in this respect than any other city I would consider moving to.

I am optimistic about my plan to move, but I do not expect it to be easy at all. I am going to work hard to make this work.
My main concerns are finding work.
What do you guys think? Am I being stupid about this? I feel like I need an outside assessment of my ideas and maybe some cynicism so I can view the situation with more clarity. Although, I am 100% going to move because I am young and want to chase my dreams 🙂

TLDR: 21M half Japanese with citizenship, wanting to move to Tokyo to pursue a career in the music, fashion and art industry. Currently working as a Broadcast Engineer at a radio station, really good at making music and audio engineering, part time fashion model, high level photography and video editing skills, and hobbyist 3D fashion design. Need clarity on my ideas to move.

Thank you for reading my long post, any feedback is appreciated!

Straight talk. I don’t understand your plan other than moving and hoping you get into Music, Fashion, and Art industry. To be honest, I don’t think that is a good plan. Have you searched for open positions in your field in Japan?

  3. Legally, there is no issue. Since you have citizenship, you can be a freelance photographer, artist, DJ whatever job that normally isn’t allowed (or incredibly difficult) on regular visa types.

Logistically, it definitely seems risky. Main concerns are, how good is your Japanese? Do you have close relatives that are willing to care for you in the worst financial case scenario?

  4. Father here, so you can take what I have to say with a grain of salt, as do my own children: Go for it—the worst that can happen is that you don’t achieve the career in Tokyo that you want, which is the same outcome as would happen if you were not to try. If you weigh the pros and cons, invariable the cons always win. Go for it—some of the best experiences of your life are going to happen as you work toward a goal.
