Recommended Incremental Immersion Material, from TV Shows to Publications?

I took a year of Japanese 14 years ago and have not used it actively since. I still know how to say a lot of basic things, but my kanji, hiragana, and katana are practically at square one now. I want to get back into it, and I see a lot of people talking about “Immersion” as being a great way to learn. I was wondering if there is a step-by-step immersion list out there of ways to incrementally immerse yourself in the language.

Things I have thought of would be:

Tier 1:

\* Reading children’s books in Hiragana

\* Watching Japanese baby shows

Tier 2:

\* Preteen books with Hiragana and Kanji (Manga?)

\* Japanese kids shows, younger anime

Tier 3:

\* Changing social media language to Japanese

\* Japanese kids documentaries on Japanese Regions and Culture

Tier 4:

\* Changing Computer Language to Japanese

\* Preteen Anime/Shows

\* Higher Level VNs

And so on. Does any of this make sense? Are these stupid ideas? Anything better out there?

  1. YMMV, but for me, reading children’s books was boring. Initially there’s the great feeling of “hey I can read this!”, but it fades quickly and the story is too simple to sustain interest. Same goes for children’s shows or anime.

I feel it’s better to watch/read stuff you actually like. Others may disagree, but turn on english subtitles if the content is too hard. The key is to practice active listening and not switch off your brain. I only glance at the subtitles if I can’t understand completely, otherwise I try my utmost not to look at them.

I’ve also found it useful in my journey to join a friendly discord so that I can ask others about tough sentences and grammar points. More efficient than asking here on reddit. I use this one personally – https://discord.gg/rkhgBab
