Getting lots of annoying messages from local recruiters

Somehow my number has got into these critters ‘to contact’ list, coming through my WhatsApp.

Even with ‘silence unknown contacts’ selected, the messages still get through. Other than ‘block and report’ (ineffective as they’re using international services to mask their contact numbers), much as I think it unlikely, is there anyway I can have my number removed through some kind of bureaucratic agency or online database here?

And no, I’m not responding to them – hoping they eventually just remove me from their lists if no other option is available…

  1. hm? whatsapp ‘recruiters’ are just identity/money/whatever-stealing spam, no?

Nobody here uses whatsapp to contact, are the numbers you’re getting this spam from even domestic? Or random locations?

    Block and move on.

  2. They are not recruiter, this is a scam, and no really way to avoid them apart from not using whatsapp.

If you have telegram the same one will contact you too.

  3. I am getting them too lately. One of the pages they mentioned is CareerCross, where I had a profile a few years ago, although I don’t remember giving my phone number.

Just saying to confirm if there might have been a data leak from that place.

  4. On WhatsApp, I get phone calls from India and Myanmar country codes, but never messages. I “report and block” them and move on.

  5. There has been a lot of spam lately, under the guise of a recruitment agency reaching out, via WhatsApp. Often the location they say they are in doesn’t match the country code. I simply do the following: 1. Block 2. Delete

  6. Make sure your profile photo and status is set to “Contacts Only” and Read Messages is off. They’ll send messages to a profile they see is active (profile photo and WhatsApp status). I used to get lots of them, since I did that, I haven’t been bothered. One even had the audacity to turn off disappearing messages, because I had set it to delete 24 hours for every new chat. I blocked that MF faster than Shaq did Mutombo.

  7. This is happening to me on a daily basis and one even tried a video call out of nowhere… //sigh

Have blocked/reported but they just keep coming.

Going to try those settings mentioned here already.

  8. This is a new scam and it’s hitting a lot of the recruiting agencies in Tokyo. I’ve seen agencies and/or agency staff posting warnings on LinkedIn about it.

  9. “Hi this is [ ] from [ ], our client is looking for Japan based staff”. It is a scam, do not reply. They are not real recruiters.

  10. This is coming up recently. WhatsApp isn’t used in Japan. If you’re getting unknown contacts via WhatsApp, it’s a scam

Just like if people in the US were to get random messages on LINE then it’s obviously a scam

  11. If you check the country code, it’s not from within Japan. I’ve gotten messages from Vietnam, Libya, Cambodia, etc.

Block and report. That’s all you can do.

  12. This is a scam and the initial messages are all bots and it doesn’t matter what you reply they will follow up the same way.

  13. All bots, testing to see who will respond. If you do then you get on a list for the next level of bots.
