Strange Job Hunting Experience

Hello!

I live in Oita Prefecture and have been here about a year. Recently I passed an application screening and a virtual interview (both confirmed via email to have “passed”) for a private teaching job at a location like Kumon (but not Kumon, nor the JET program, I contacted the company directly). I interviewed on the 6th of September and got my results on the 11th.

They told me, at that time, they’d contact me back when they’ve located a branch available for me to work at in the area or one commutable. I have yet to hear back from them for a week. I sent a few emails during this time but have not received any response.

Is this normal? Everywhere else I’ve sent emails they responded in a pretty prompt manner (at most, maybe 4 days). I was really hoping to wrap my school schedule (i’m in University) around my job since my job would take up most of my time. But my registration is tomorrow (I figured that I’d know ***half a month after my interview whether or not I’d be hired***) and I’ve yet to hear anything.

I’m only about to turn 22 so I’m very new to job hunting in general, much less job hunting in a foreign country. I’d love to hear your experience!

  1. If you get ghosted after an interview it simply means you didn’t get hired.

That’s unfortunately the norm, not only in Japan but in most countries unless there’s a law requiring them to contact you.

  2. It has been *5 business days* (4 if you dont include today) since you received positive results regarding your interview (yesterday was a national holiday).

You have “sent a few emails”? It seems excessive (and strange). I get that you are looking to build your school schedule but I think you are coming across a little impatient. The process does not care about your school schedule. Perhaps a little more patience is in order?

    Good luck
