Question about keeping PR from outside Japan

I have a quick question about PR and I havent been able to find the complete answer Im looking for online.

From what Ive found it seems like you can be outside of Japan for 5 years and get your visa status back as long as you have a re-entry permit. Would a short trip like a holiday count to ensure I am able to keep it tho? Like maybe coming back to visit friends and family every 3 years or so.

I want to keep because I want to come back here later in life, but I dont want to have it tie me to the country either

  1. You can probably do it a few times before immigration really starts asking questions.

But you also have to consider other things like will you remain a resident/keep bank accounts/property/keep paying taxes/etc.

  2. Yes you certainly could. I have friends that do exactly like you said, going back here once every couple of years and immigration grants them the reentry permit every time. The immigration is actually the one that advice to never let their reentry permit expired, they can let the zairyu card expired, that doesn’t matter. Reentry permit is everything here.

For tax, just declare yourself non-resident to the city hall, and you won’t be eligible for the resident tax, so that won’t be a problem. You do not get healthcare or social insurance though, but that’s just the cost I guess,
