Television on car infotainment systems in Japan.

I’m curious why the Japanese government allows driver’s to watch videos on their infotainment systems. I’m pretty sure the USA government puts regulations on car manufacturers to prevent such activities from taking place here. I would assume that there would be safety concerns regarding drivers watching videos on their infotainment screens.

  1. They don’t. They turn off when the car is in motion. There’s probably ways to hack that, but it wouldn’t be legal.

  2. Watching video on the car navi while driving is illegal. The video is supposed to shut off when the car is in motion but methods to bypass that safety feature are easy to find on the Internet. The drivers who stare at their cell phones while driving are the ones who really annoy me because they drive erratically when they do that. That’s also illegal but very common.

  3. I’ve had car dealers disable the “turn off while moving” feature as a courtesy for me.

The stated purpose is that it’s use is for “passengers” to be able to operate the navigation even while the car is moving, which also has the “unintended” consequence of the tv being watchable too.

  4. My question is why on earth would anyone even want to watch Japanese TV in a car or anywhere else?
