10-year PR with no savings?

Hello,
I’ve looked through some older posts and seen many opinions so I thought I’d try for a few more, or hopefully someone who’s been in my situation/applied for PR recently.

I belatedly realized that I’ve hit the 10 year mark, and while I’ve been assuming I would get rejected for PR for no savings, I’ve seen some posts saying that they didn’t need to send in proof of assets, just show a steady income. Anyone had experience with this recently for PR?

My personal situation: single, N1, working with Humanities visa for all 10+ years, currently on a 3-year. My income is 270k a month, seishain. I’m effectively a manager. My company (here 6 years now) got hit pretty hard by COVID, and while they’re trying to take care of us and expand, I honestly don’t expect a raise in the next year.

Mostly I’m debating whether it’s worth it to apply now with no savings but good working history/status with my company, or try and find a better-paying job and take a few more years to hopefully build up some savings.

Money’s been getting tighter, especially with the exchange rate, so I’ve been thinking about moving on, but if I have a chance to get PR even with no savings, I might reconsider. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your time~

  1. It’s a bit strange not having savings with an average salary like this, but not a problem.

Why you care about rates? You buy your food overseas?

If you move jobs now you become less stable than you are now for immigration.

Why wait more? It’s free and almost painless.

  2. How do you manage to have no savings after 10 years? What are you spending your money on?

  3. You are more than qualified. Based on the details you mentioned, there is literally 0 reason you’d be rejected. Honestly, you could have probably gotten PR a few years ago with your (presumably stable) seishain income — regardless how much/little it is.

  4. Bro, you need to learn to say no to the リボ払い. 10 years working with no savings, while having no family to support, and (assuming) no home loan to pay off, is a pretty awful financial situation.

Especially since your salary should be enough to support a decent amount of leisure and make savings.

  5. I got PR and had no real savings at the time, but did have a full time job and decent salary

  6. I think you can easily get it.
I got PR with just 200k a month and 3 years. (I was on long-term (japanese ancestry visa)) not sure if that matters.

  7. “I’m effectively a manager.”

This doesn’t mean anything. Anyhow, just apply. Don’t use a lawyer, just apply. The worst that can happen is they say ‘try again later.’

  8. Why are people trying to play financial advisor here? OP didn’t ask you how he can reduce his CC debt.

  9. 13 years and no savings here. Also looking to apply for PR so good to see a few folks chiming in that it’s possible!

For all the financial advice critics, some of us are here for a good time, not a long one. Why have savings when the world is on fire? There’s good food to eat, tattoos to get, and experiences to be had.

  10. Seems like you’re good to go. I used to have a similar situation regarding savings. Sucks but it’s your cash.

  11. Ladies, gentlemen and others without savings please don’t hesitate to head to r/JapanFinance to discover and discuss our saviors the ideco and nisa who allow you to get multiple tax benefits and invest for the long term.

You all work hard for your cash so take some time to consider how to optimize savings and investments.

Did you know the money you send into your ideco is net of tax ? You won’t have income or resident tax on those amounts. So you are already saving 10%+ on whatever you send to the ideco. In addition, like the nisa, any investment profit is tax free. Sounds interesting ? [Come read about it.](https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanFinance/wiki/index/investing/long/)

If you are interested to open such account, you should do it now to benefit from the 2023 quota (or loose it forever).

  12. Immigration cares far more that you: are gainfully employed with a decent salary (bonus if seishain), have paid all your taxes (residence tax, income tax, etc) on time, have paid all your pension on time (or been granted exemptions for any periods where you were not contributing), and haven’t committed any crimes. They don’t care about your savings as long as you can demonstrate that you have the means to support yourself here and won’t be a burden on social security systems.

  13. People here so hot and bothered by OP having no savings. He’s single for fucks sake, god forbid he enjoy Japan. Get a life, go out and drink at some nice bars, enjoy 風俗 with sexy women, or take a trip around the country or outside.

  14. May I ask what does “no saving” actually means here? Like can we give a more specific range here? Like how many yen and above? 1 million yen ? 3 million yen? What is the boarder line for no saving? It’s too vague…

  15. I got PR in 2017. I don’t remember anything about savings. Only salary, taxes, pension, etc (for both of us).

    Everyone’s broke anyway.

Pull out the application form, and check to see what it asks about your loot.

  16. As far as I know, they only look at your taxes, social insurances (nenkin) and proof of income for PR application.

They will only look at your savings if you’re going to apply for citizenship.

  17. I applied for PR in 2018 and was asked to prove I have savings, but that’s only because I was technically unemployed at the time.
