I know there’s a general preference for people who come from the West but I am a native speaker of English and worked as an English teacher in Hong Kong. Do you think it’s possible?
That isn’t to say that in the future, there won’t be positions. You should reach out to the Japanese embassy in India and let them know your interest. The process unfortunately requires that each applicant apply and interview in the country they hold a passport in to apply to the program.
If your country of citizenship is a participating country, you can apply.
Otherwise it doesn’t matter your level of English or experience. JET is a joint effort between collaborating governments; so it is less like a traditional job process.
If it isn’t possible now, I’m sure with surging inflation Japan will open it up to Indian passport holders when they realize that American JETs won’t be able to afford doing the JET programme needing to repay their student loans on a falling Yen salary having to buy back the dollar at 140 jpy to the dollar
Indian here. No, not anymore. The info on the website about the CIRs is years old.

According to the jet program stats, there are only 2 Indian jet program participants, and they are both CIRs.
