Recommendations for US passport photo?

I need to renew passport. I tried using the Ki-Re-i photo booth, but it didn’t seem to have a 5cm/5cm. Any suggestions? Or should I just go to a photo studio? (I am mailing in my application, not going directly to the embassy).

  1. The embassy has a custom Ki-Re-i (or similar brand?) photo booth inside the interview chamber that takes the required photos. Alternatively you can take them yourself with and print them at Family Mart (there is a service for US visa/passport photo).

  2. You can also do it yourself, scale it to printing size using idphoto4you.com, and print it out at the conbini for 40 yen.

Just make sure to evenly light your face.

  3. I went through this problem recently since all the photo booths in my area didn’t offer the US passport size. The US embassy has a photo booth to take a photo for 1000 yen, but since I don’t live in Tokyo that wasn’t an option for me.

I downloaded a passport photo app and had a friend take a photo of me behind a white background. I got photo the printed at the conbini printer on photo paper. I think it cost me 20 yen.

I sent in my passport a month ago, so far I haven’t heard back from them.

  4. Kitamura camera does it with the white background and all, but it is expensive. 1600 yen for 2 photos I think.

  5. I would recommend a photo studio over a photo booth. I got tons of pictures, plus a CD with the digital files, and was able to pick the one I wanted from 5 poses. It was around ¥1200.

  6. I have to do the same tomorrow.. also needs a white not blue background.. Japanese drivers licenses are 5 by 5.4 but It sounds easier just to go to s photo studio..

An Americans that got their passport renewed recently, how long did it take ?

  7. I just did this using the kirei Photo Booth. I read somewhere on the embassy page that if you couldn’t get a 50x50mm format from the machine to just get the largest (50x70mm) and they could trim it to the correct size. There’s also a Photo Booth inside the embassy for taking your photos there.
