Girls in japan-masks, beauty/skincare

Hello! I was wondering how you girls get around makeup getting ruined/getting skincare problems when wearing masks? I feel like wearing masks breaks me out and gives me pimples (yes i wash my masks) i think its to do with the humidity, and the humidity also can fuck with my makeup. (I have oily skin)

Also, any good products for under arm sweating? I wear deodorant and i dont smell, i just sweat a lot which limits me in terms of fashion- dont have the money to get the botox unfortunately otherwise i would!

Thanks <3

  1. i stopped wearing anything but eye makeup and under eye concealer haha

i double cleanse with a cleaning balm and then aha every night. switching masks during the day and using a quick face refresh wipe now and then helps.

for underarm i got the botox. i tried prescription ones but they hurt. i’ve been trying glycolic acid and then antiperspirant. to get actual strength buy a US brand like old spice or w/e off amazon

  2. Hope someone can help about the breakouts – in my case my breakouts are caused by dry skin flakes getting into my pores, so wearing masks has actually reduced breakouts for me cause it keeps my skin more hydrated 😅. Unless I’m going to be taking the mask off for a lot time, I usually go light on the makeup around my chin and bring powder or touch up. Definitely I always get lipstick all over the insides of my masks 😩. Maybe a setting spray or something would help though?

  3. I usually do concealer only where I really need it followed by powder foundation all over for sweaty days and it usually looks better than liquid post mask. Or look for liquid that is thin and sticks/blends to the skin vs sitting on top. Usually marketed as “second skin”

For skincare – try something with clay, especially if you get clogged pores and have oily skin. Make sure you’re moisturizing enough since too little makes your skin produce more oil.

Brands I like – Lunamea cleanser oil(holy grail), clay cleanser, obagi c(good for acne), vt cosme cicagel, drunk elephant. Laura mercier is my favorite for face makeup.

Would love to here about underarm stuff as I import dove but still sweat like crazy…

  4. Are you sure you have oily skin, as opposed to sensitive, overly-dried out skin? For a long time, I thought I had dry skin, but it turns out that all the mattifying/oil reducing/astringent toning products I was using were actually making my skin oilier by overly drying me out. When I started treating my skin gently (using fragrance-free products as much as possible and using four or five layers of moisturizing products every day and night), I got a lot less oily.

What kind of detergent are you using on your masks? That could also be a source of breakouts if the soap doesn’t agree with you.

For underarm sweat, I swear by men’s anti-perspirant lol. Some people believe that the aluminum that blocks sweat might be harmful, but I haven’t found any convincing studies so I continue to use them. The antiperspirant I use is 17% Aluminum zirconium octachlorohydrex. Anything less than 15% doesn’t work for me.

  5. I don’t wear much in the way of foundation because my skin color is much darker than what’s available.
When I do wear foundation, I apply it on my forehead, round the eyes, and temples. I generally don’t apply it around my mouth. A bit rubs off on the disposable masks I use, but not a ton.

    I haven’t had breakouts wearing a mask.

For sweating, Matsumoto Kiyoshi and other drugstores sell underarm pads that you can stick in the pit area of your shirts or jackets. The brand I like is Ruff Ase Waki Pad. The off brands aren’t as sticky.

For skincare, I used to use a lot of the DHC pimple sets. I think they changed some of their formulas a few years ago so I stopped using them. Luckily my skin had started clearing up.
I’d say I have oily skin. I wash my face in the morning and at night. I apply lotion or some other skin care. I’m using RMK’s cooling gel now. When I’m out I carry oil blotting sheets and in a pinch use tissue or tp to soak up alllll the oil that forms on my forehead.

  6. Gonna be a long one since I’m way too passionate about skincare and makeup… bear with me.

As for skincare, I would say mask acne+makeup is a bad combination. Most likely is clogged pores from sweat and debris, and makeup won’t help.

I wash my face (normal/combo skin) with a reglar face soap from the drugstore every morning, followed by misting some toner. I personally use Naturie スキンコンディショナーハトムギ化粧水. Very gentle on the skin and feels nice. Their line is on drugstores and pretty affordable. I just add it to a 100 yen spray bottle and use it on my body too.
I also use Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA 30 day miracle toner.

As for morning creams I use a 肌ラボ gel type cream. I feel this works better for me in summer since it’s less heavy than a normal moisturizer. Is also one you can get easily at the drugstore.

I rotate it with Some By Mi AHA BHA PHA 30 day miracle cream (can be purchased at Q100). It has exfoliating chemicals so it’s a MUST to wear sunscreen if you wear it during the day.

Regardless of the skincare I use, I always wear sunscreen if I go out. I use the Bioré UV watery essence for my face and Bioré watery gel for my body.

For makeup, my first step is primer. Helps fill the pores but also to keep the makeup in place. I personally use MAC Prep+Prime as half a pump is more than enough for what I need. I have a Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base sample, and man it’s so good too!

During summer I try to go for lighter formulas on my foundation. I personally use Kosas Revealer Skin-Improving Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 25 (ordered from Sephora US) and I have been loving it.
Any BB or CC cream, or tinted moisturizer will definitely help in this heat and with acne.

I set my makeup with little tinsy bit of powder and finish it with I MAC Fix+ to keep my makeup on while wearing a mask (and even when I didn’t use it too). The rub off is minimal, so it helps.

To take off my makeup I double cleanse, specially since sunscreen and sweat can make you break out pretty bad. I tried some creams as my first cleansing step, and right now I’m loving Nice & Quick ボタニカルコールドクリーム, also from the drugstore so it doesn’t break the bank. The pot is big, and you just need a bit to melt off the makeup.

My second cleansing step is the same face soap I use in the morning. I continue with one of both toners, depending on my night cream. I usually use the Neutrogena Retinol night cream so I tend yo avoid using it with BHA AHA and PHA exfoliants.

If I plan to wear the 肌ラボ cream, I will use the Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant. Man I love this one so much.

I think for acne/oily skin I would recommend BHA since it has salicylic acid that helps with acne, bumps and clogged pores.

For deodorant, I use Certain Dri https://amzn.asia/d/45F74yH and it works wonders for me. No sweaty armpits on my clothes no more! I just recommend following the directions as it’s a strong medicated deodorant.

And that’s all! Sorry for the novel😓

  7. I don’t really wear make up but what helped my skin was to stop using reusable masks and to change your mask after excessive sweating.

  8. I haven`t been wearing any makeup since summer started up besides some mascara (never been a big makeup person anyway so not a big deal). The biore foam face wash is an absolute gem! I use it on my face and my back (bacne) and it works really well for keeping breakouts to a minimum. It`s good for oily skin too because it has salycylic acid in the acne formula one

  9. if you use reusable masks, dry them in the sun.

    switch masks during the day

less makeup will help, cleansing twice a day is important.

but, the most important advice I can give is to brush your teeth and tongue three times a day (after every meal) and floss once. Gargling salt water at night will also help prevent the buildup of bacteria on your tongue and tonsils.

otherwise you’re just creating a bacteria haven bc it’s warm dark and wet under your mask.

    Good luck!

  10. I get Arm & Hammer antiperspirant/deodorant off iherb, I don’t sweat from pits much at all with that.

  11. The only foundation I can wear now is Suppin Maker by INTEGRATE. It’s honestly like a magical potion that I can’t live without at this point haha. For concealer I use Nars in Chantilly. It’s the only one pale enough for me! I then use a cream cheek from Cezanne. I don’t powder my face anymore because it all just slips off!

I also don’t use cloth masks, I use disposable “3D masks” which reallllllllly help because they minimise contact with my skin. I use kids ones because my face is stupidly small.

Also finding a sunscreen that didn’t slip off my face/make me even oilier was a big improvement! That and making sure my morning skincare routine was stripped down and wasn’t making me too moisturised (as I’ll be getting more than enough moisture from the air’s humidity all day lol). It’s taken time but I’ve gotten to a good routine now!

  12. A few answers to your questions

    * Wear “3d mask” type masks, they touch your face less. I like the “victorian mask” brand the best because the ear straps are gentle.
    * Seal makeup with “メイクカバーうるおいミスト” it will not move.
    * Too faced’s peach foundation also has a LOT of staying power if you/your skin does not like the above mist. I have very fair skin as well.
    * Botox shots suck. I have had them done for years due to severe hyperhidrosis. They were covered by insurance in my country, but not in Japan. The effect only lasts for 6mos~1year depending on how bad your sweat is. I had spent SO much money on them just trying to get some relief before I discovered 反転剪除法 surgery, which is permanent armpit sweat gland removal (of course, by then I had spent more than this single surgery cost on all my years of getting botox lmfao). Consider saving up for this if your sweating is truly severe, and not just a seasonal problem during summer. My quality of life has changed dramatically since I had it done.
