I am trying to plan the logistics of moving to japan with my snake.
First question — do landlords check inside apartments to know if their tenants have pets, and do reptiles count as pets in the same way cats or dogs do? In NYC my lease has ‘no pets’ stipulated, and I’ve never had an issue with building staff doing repairs and seeing my snake tank.
Second — does one need to be in country to rent an apartment, or could I initiate my lease from the US and thereby bring my snake with me on the first flight rather than renting from within Japan and then flying back to the US and again to Japan to pick her up?

Search past posts about bringing snakes in. Huge costs involved, but possible.
Unless you have a proxy agency leasing for you, no you can’t.
