Did I get a bad batch of this pudding? The caramel was very bitter and the pudding very lightly flavored. Was that this specific 7-11 brand? Or just how this type of pudding tastes compared to western?

  1. That’s not pudding. It’s a custard called “flan”. You’re supposed to incorporate a little bit of the darker top with the lighter rest of it when you spoon a bite so that the flavors evenly distribute and combine in your mouth. You don’t even need to chew it. Just kind of squish and move it around with your tongue as it melts in your mouth to get the full flavor experience.

  2. Try an another brand. I find a lot products bad at 7-11, idk at 7-11 I always find the food not right. The only thing I buy at 7-11 is smoothie.

  3. The flan may be bitter because it’s coffee-flavored, as they do in Vietnamese shops in California.

  4. Japanese “purin” pudding and flan although very similar.. are not the same.

Japanese purin is made with *fresh milk*.

Flan is usually made with *evaporated milk*.

The “dark” part is made from caramelized sugar.

The bitterness is caused by the burning of the sugar to make the caramel and is a standard process in all Japanese purin.
