Health Insurance cost raised dramatically?

Let me preface by saying that I am a dumbass, and am very aware that I’m a dumbass. The problem I caused is one I intend to fix.

Hey all,

Student here on the NHI, since October of last year. If it contributes, I am missing a few months of insurance payments.

I’m moving soon so I planned to just get the ones I’m missing done all at once, but when I looked, the price was dramatically higher than usual. It’s around 6k per month!

I’m going tomorrow to the 区役所 to talk about it and pay my fees, but this seems a bit extreme, no?

Anyway if anyone has any idea of what it is, please let me know! I’m assuming it’s just what I have to pay back because I’m an idiot who waited to long to pay his dues, but maybe it’s something else?

  1. the reason you are getting bills is because you did not do nenmatsu chousei and jp gov automatically bills you once you turn 20

are you still a student? if so you can get it waived and don’t have to pay. talk to the ward office and they will help

  2. The other person is mistaken. They are talking about pension and not health insurance. If you have not renewed your exemption from that as a student you need to do it separately each year.

On to your problem, the increase would have occurred starting this year if you didn’t file an income tax report. It’s based on your last year’s salary. Because you didn’t report anything you are receiving the minimum basic cost 60,000 per year. If you had reported it, it could be decreased to 15,500 or so if your income is actually zero. This new set of bills would have come several months ago, so you need to be more careful at take care of this type of thing right away.
