I am going to cancel my VISA from Japan and moving back to my country but JPY is so weak right now that I dont want to do the currency transfer. Can I keep my bank account if I leave Japan.
Legally, no. You have to be a resident to have a bank account in Japan based on the rules, but they don’t necessarily actively check if you’re away. Some people have had experience of being away but their bank accounts remained active.
Alternatively, how about opening a foreign currency account in your country where you can hold your JPY without converting?
The answer depends on your bank, but even those who are willing to let you keep your account open will likely place non-resident limits on it. You might have to return to Japan to be able to transfer the money out, for example.
