How to best plan Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route with a hike in between?

Hi all,

I need some help with planning the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route. I will be in Toyama for a few days in mid October but on the last day I plan to do this route. I know you can do the entire route in one day and can then get to Nagano at the end. The tickets would be from [https://www.alpen-route.com/](https://www.alpen-route.com/) in that case.

However I want to do a slightly modified version of this and split up the route with a hike in between. This is what I had in mind based on this timetable [https://www.alpen-route.com/en/timetable/](https://www.alpen-route.com/en/timetable/)

\- Early morning get to Murodo

\- Hike mount Tateyama

\- Stay overnight in the area

\- Next morning do the rest of the alpine route and get to Nagano. On the same day travel to Tokyo accommodation.

My questions are:

1. How do I buy tickets for each part of the transport in advance to get to Murodo? I don’t want to risk having to do this on the day. Same for the remainder part for the next day to get to Nagano.
2. I am aware there might be snow during this period to do the hike. Has anyone had any experience doing this hike in snowy conditions in October?
3. Has anyone done the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route? If so, when and how did you find it? How did you take this route?

  1. I think you buy a through pass on the day which covers a period of 3 days but it lets you get from one end to the other (but not random backtracks). Or just buy a partial one way trip to the top then on the day of travel buy the tickets down.

As long as you buy it in the morning this isn’t particularly risky. The advance tickets are limited anyway so they expect most people to buy a ticket at tateyama or ogizawa station

It was difficult to find lodging at the top that wasn’t insanely expensive but I managed to book one through rakuten travel.

I’ll be doing something similar but from Nagano side on Oct 11 so if you message me then I can let you know

  2. You can stay at a mountain hut next to Murodo. One is on rakuten, the others need to be reserved by phone.

It’s hard to say how much snow there will be. If there is snow you might need crampons/axe. If it’s just a little spikes and hiking poles are fine.
