How long does it take to go through Kansai Airport?

If I’m supposed to land at 07:30, can/should I schedule airport shuttle to depart at 08:30? FYI I’m going to use `app.nearme.jp` service. Am I cutting it close cos I read somewhere that it takes about 45 mins to go through immigration and customs and to collect luggage? Should I delay the shuttle departure time by 30 mins or so? If you know a better (cheaper) way for a single person with big luggage to go from KIX to Kyoto, also let me know. Thanks.

  2. There is no guessing how long it will take once there’s checked luggage.

I was able to clear custom (from deplane to getting out of the restricted area to the arrival hall) in under 15 minutes, no checked luggage though. I pre-filled the Visit Japan Web for both custom declaration as well as health declaration and have a passport eligible for visa upon arrival. By the time I walk through the luggage area, it hadn’t started moving with my flight’s luggages. But would I plan all my connections with that? I would probably plan with 1.5 hours and still be nervous that somehow I wouldn’t make it in time, that’s why I never prebook anything that doesn’t give me flexibility to use different shuttle on the same day.

Unless you have other mobility issues (you didn’t mention besides a big luggage, which I assume have wheels), just take the Haruka Hello Kitty JR train to Kyoto Station.

I’ve no idea what that service is you’re talking about, but any reason you’re not planning on taking the limousine bus? [https://www.kate.co.jp/en/timetable/detail/KY](https://www.kate.co.jp/en/timetable/detail/KY)
They’ll have big storage under the bus for your big luggage and you carry on comes up with you.

I personally wouldn’t make plans that require you to have cleared customs & immigration and retrieve your luggage and orient yourself within an hour. That’s assuming of course that your flight arrives on time to begin with.

  4. Since you mentioned you have two big pieces of luggage, you may also want to look into luggage delivery from the airport. It usually delivers the next day, so if you pack an overnight bag to carry on the bus/train to Kyoto it will save a lot of headaches hauling bags around. Counters are at the airport and usually east to find.

  5. When you’re importing a pet it takes between 5 and 7 hours if your paperwork is all straight. YMMV.
