How to take luggage to the airport

So I have a flight tomorrow to my country for this summer vacation and I’m taking with me 2 big suitcases around 23kg each. When I came here, the airline forgot ny luggage so they sent it after some time with ヤマト, but now that I have to take the luggage myself to the airport I’m a bit confused on how to do so. Is this type of luggage allowed on buses or trains? Which way would be the best for this?

  1. 2 suitcases should be fine in the train. Just try not to go during rush hour if possible.

  2. On Shinkansen, you can bring your bags freely up to a certain size. More than that, you’re going to need to buy a special seat that has room to put oversize bags. Don’t remember the exact dimensions but you can search 新幹線特大荷物 for more details.

For regular bus and trains, there are no rules prohibiting big luggages so you just have to make sure it doesn’t get in the way for other people. Although since you mention that it is 23kg each I’m not sure how you can manage that. If you’re travelling alone I’d imagine that’s going to be difficult.

The easiest would be to ask the ヤマト to pick up your bags but that needs to be done at least a day before so maybe that’s not an option now.

I think your option would be taking a taxi to nearby train station and continue on airport shuttle bus. Or taxi all the way to the airport if you have extra money.

Hope this helps and happy holiday

  3. The best way would be to have arranged luggage delivery a couple of days ago. But too late for that.

You are usually allowed maximum of 2 bags on a train for free technically, but no-one is likely to complain if you have hand luggage too. No chance on local buses, but should be fine to put underneath on an airport limousine bus, if you’re going that way. Plan your route carefully to avoid changing at stations without elevators or complicated routes and allow extra time. Avoid using trains between 7.30 and 9.30am.

If it’s within standard aeroplane limits then yes.

Probably using Yamato yourself, but too late for that now.

  5. Normal trains and busses, you will be the foreigner doing the weird thing by taking luggage with you even if it is allowed, the Japanese will at most pull a single small bag – but generally courier luggage to the airport.

However, the airport limousine bus, and narita express, has luggage space and this is what you should take. We tend to taxi to the bus terminal in shinjuku, then take either the limousine bus, or NRT to the airport.

  6. You can go take one suitcase to the airport and stick it in the coin locker for a day.

  7. Little late but call kuroneko yamato, they might be able to pick it up or you might have to take it to one of their offices but if you hurry it might be there tomorrow waiting for you upstairs on the wall at the airline check-in.
