Taking a break from work

Hi Everyone,

I’m tempting to resign then take a break for 2-3 months due for focus on my mental and physical health however I’m not PR holder.

Is this going to negativity effect PR or nationalization process in Japan?

I appreciate if anyone have similar experience and can share it,that would be really helpful.

  1. What sort of visa do you hold? This would be possible on a spousal visa (or PR).

When you resign from a job, you need to inform immigration (your employer might as well). Then you have 3 months to find a new job. *

*There is some leeway if you update immigration.

  2. Why do you want to resign? I would suggest you visit a doctor and prepare a certificate for long leave. Take unpaid leave and rejoin the company once you feel like joining. That would be a wiser decision than resigning.
You will also receive a sickness allowance 60-70% of your salary every month from the employment insurance company that you might be paying every month.

  3. If you don’t take sick leave, the long term gap will negatively effect a 10 year PR. if you use another path, it will have no impact.

  4. This will greatly depend on the company but I wanted to travel home for a couple of months years ago so I put it to my company like “I know it’s difficult so I can resign if that’s better but I will be needing to go to my home country for these 2 months. If possible I’d love to take unpaid leave but I know it would be annoying for everyone so if you want I’ll resign so you can replace me” that kind of thing. I gave them a few months notice and they said ok to taking the unpaid leave! I still had to pay health insurance and nenkin for the time away but this way I was never “unemployed”

ETA medical leave as mentioned on other comments definitely sounds the way to go though!

  5. Definitely look into medical leave. I know someone who got a certificate from a doctor for depression and got 6 months’ leave. He didn’t need to quit his job.
