Tohoku summer matsuri – any tips?

Hi all,

I’ve purchased a JR East Tohoku Pass and I’ll be travelling to Akita, Aomori and Sendai to see three of the big Tohoku festivals over a five day period in the coming week – (the Kanto Matsuri on the 5th, Nebuta Matsuri on the 6th and 7th, and the Sendai Tanabata Matsuri on the 8th).

Yes, the accommodation was expensive!

I’m coming into these without much in the way of personal recommendations; I’ve been using various travel sites, youtube videos etc for planning. Does anyone have any hints or tips regarding things to see/do at the festivals which they’re happy to share? Any must-sees, must-eats, must-drinks?

Also accepting tips regarding handling the heat haha.

Oh and if anyone else is around for the festivals and wants to meet up for a beer or meal, please let me know!

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks all 🙂

  1. Aomori Nebuta, Hirosaki Neputa, Goshogawara Tachineputa, Towada Lake, Shirakami Sanchi, Sannai Maruyama, Probably some fireworks too.

  2. I considered going Nebuta in Aomori, but the weather looks absolutely horrible for the entire weekend :/

  3. Drink up Akita sake by the bucket during Kanto to wash down some delightful miso-tanpo. They recently have a lot of craft breweries as well
