Japanese Universities, Study Abroad, Direct Enrollment

I’m looking for a list (or a website with a list) of Japanese universities that allow for direct enrollment study abroad.

If anyone wants to share some immediate recommendations… ideally the university is located in Tokyo, and the term is at least a semester long, but preferably an academic year.

I believe Waseda and Keio university are good examples of what I’m looking for.

I can read and speak Japanese. I’ve never taken the JLPT.

Please give advice/point me in the right direction here!

  2. By “direct enrollment study abroad” do you mean a program at a Japanese university that allows you to enroll without having a partner agreement with your home university?

Most universities that allow this only do so for short-term programs usually between 2 and 8 weeks, usually during the summer or spring vacations, but you might be able to find a semester length program.

Keep in mind though, that even though your home university doesn’t have to have a partner agreement for a short-term program, you still have to be enrolled in a university and your home university will have to agree to send you. I highly recommend that you talk with the international center of your home university first, before you start applying to these programs.

As far as I know there is not a comprehensive list of these types of programs because they are somewhat unusual and are really dependent the particular circumstances of each university. Also, it will depend on what you want to study. Are you looking for Japanese language classes (the most common type) or are you looking to study something in particular?

However, the *Study in Japan* website ([https://www.studyinjapan.go.jp/en/](https://www.studyinjapan.go.jp/en/)) is probably the best place to look. Search for short-term programs and restrict your search to Kanto for the Tokyo area.
