I am visiting family in the states and planning to buy the new iPhone 15 Pro Max before flying back to Japan. I was wondering if anyone knows if its possible if I can convert my Japanese Rakuten SIM card (physical) to an ESIM that I can use in my USA-model iPhone 15?

(this page refers to lost/stolen but it applies to any reissue)
I don’t think it’s relevant that it will be a US purchase–they’re the same thing. As the other poster says, just contact rakuten for a sim update as if you were buying here.
I guess it depends on your state, but when I priced a 14pro this past March, the price there in california was only about ¥3000 cheaper than the same thing here (using the ¥/$ exchange rate on the day I compared). I put it off. At ¥189,800 for the base model here, divided by 148 = $1,282.43 tax included. The base model in the US is $1199, so add tax wherever you are for a comparison.
