Skimming exercises for learning Japanese

This process is so fast that it is basically unconscious. This also probably is the main reason why the [say the color not the word](https://www.etr.org/default/assets/File/etr-blog/Say%20the%20Color%20Not%20the%20Word%20Handout.pdf) exercise is so difficult. I haven’t tried this exercise in Japanese, but I think it would be really easy because my brain is still so slow while converting Japanese characters into words. How would I train this part of the language? Is the answer to just read more?
Or would skimming exercises help with this?
