How often Dogeza used in the work culture? Used in court setting or at home?

  1. I have never once seen dogeza performed outside movies and TV in a non-satirical way. I’ve lived in Japan for 35 years and worked at big Japanese companies like Panasonic.

    So to answer your question, almost never.

  2. Work culture? According to dramas, occasionally but only in the most extreme circumstances. Realistically? Essentially never.

    Court setting? In the present, we only see imperial ceremonies where everyone is standing. Maybe the servants in the imperial household do dogeza or something that we never see, but personally I doubt it. In the past, we see it a lot in period dramas, so presumably it was used pretty often back then.

    At home? Theoretically possible for a severe apology (infidelity, negligence causing severe loss of property, maiming, or loss of life, etc.), but personally have never seen or heard of it being done seriously (only sarcastically or as a joke).
