Warranty on purchases

When making purchases in Japan I notice that a warranty certificate comes with the item. This procedure is not normal in my home country. I gather there is the expectation that I must keep these certificates if I ever need to make a warranty claim.

Question: can I digitise this and still use them in the event of a claim?

I’m trying to reduce paper work overload (not an easy task in Japan). I’ve had recent experiences in other admin areas where people look blankly at the digital copy and ask where the paper is and refuse re-printouts. I’d like to avoid this situation if I ever need to make a warranty claim.

Second question: is the default warranty on electronics in Japan one year?

  1. I wouldn’t rely on it. I suggest getting an accordion folder (or a few) to keep your important documents

  2. I make pdf copies of all my receipts (for large purchases, not groceries and such) and of all my warranty cards and I keep them as a backup, because I know original receipts can fade, get lost, have coffee spilled on them or whatever. But they are always meant to be backups. I never throw away the originals. Even if you are trying to cut down on clutter, one plastic file case labeled “receipts” shouldn’t take up too much space, and is a good way to have all of your receipts in one place.

A:The period is usually printed on the warranty card. But usually you can pay a little more for an extention option.
