Important things to take care of before leaving japan

Right now I can think of:
Close bank account – is it better to close it before leaving Japan?
Close water, electricity,phone, internet accounts
Apartment- I guess the hiring org takes care of this?

Any other things I need to take care of?

For the last pay, does it get deposited earlier or the same timing as the previous pays?

Thank you!

  1. Make sure to let your local city hall know that you are leaving Japan. Go and unregister. Since you are leaving Japan, you shouldn’t get a move out notice/certificate. The date you can put for moving out on the form is the date you move out of your apartment instead of leaving Japan.

  2. Sorry, posted my comment too soon 😅. Depending on what you’re doing for pension, I left my bank account open to receive my pension money. My bank allows online banking so I set up transferwise to send money home to myself. I made my coordinator my proxy to help me close my account once I get all my money.

Apartment: I had to let my real estate agency know that I was moving out and set up appointments to inspect the place. Not sure how it is for BOE owned housing.

I believe last pay was deposited the same time as all other paychecks.

  3. Banks have gotten hella strict in the last couple of years. They will freeze your account the second your residence card expired. They started calling me asking me to update my residence card before it expired. You used to be able to leave your account open without issue but not anymore.

I would talk to your utility companies and try to get your final bills paid early. My pred ended up leaving money for bills with her tax rep (boe member). There ended up being so extra expenses which the tax rep paid out of pocket, then reimbursed themself from her tax refund then sent her the rest

  4. I also have a question about pay: is my July pay the last of it or will I get paid out in August? If it makes a difference, I get paid on the 20th of each month. I would ask my supervisor but they’re incompetent.
